Confirmation hearings begin for Supreme Court nominee

20 March 2017

Democrats continued to criticize the GOP for refusing to consider President Barack Obama's nomination of appeals court judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February of previous year. He will then have the chance to make his opening remarks to the committee.

He said he "thought" that is what the Senate Judiciary Committee was supposed to do, pointing to the rumours that Democrats could challenge Mr Gorsuch's nomination with a filibuster due to Mr Garland's treatment. "How likely is it Judge Gorsuch will be able to get through?"

If confirmed, Gorsuch would restore the 5-4 conservative majority on the court that was in place before Scalia's death.

HollywoodLifers, do you think Neil Gorsuch will be confirmed?

Grassley has been a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee since 1981, his first year in the U.S. Senate.

During a talk earlier this year organized by Stanford's Office of Religious Life, Ginsburg lamented how the confirmation process has changed, recalling that one Republican senator who supported her back in 1993, "today wouldn't touch me with a 10-foot pole". "His track record shows that he would not be a mainstream Supreme Court Justice". But as that vote - with the 60-vote threshold - is technically a procedural vote, some Democrats may be tempted to vote in favor of it as a compromise and not risk being labeled an obstructionist. "But the reality is, they just don't have the votes and don't have the goods".

Why is this such a battle?

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, kicked off Supreme Court nomination hearings Monday by invoking the importance of an independent judiciary and the Constitution's separation of powers to guard against executive overreach.

Donald J. Trump has no stronger a mandate to nominate Justice Scalia's successor than did Barack Obama. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., described at her July 2009 confirmation hearing.

Some liberals are angry and bitter that Garland didn't get his shot, and feel like the seat was stolen from them.

Monday, leading organizations on the left, including MoveOn, UltraViolet, DailyKos, NARAL Pro-Choice America and others sent an email to their millions of members asking them to demand that Democrats filibuster any vote to confirm Gorsuch. "The majority are ready to go to the mat and filibuster right now". They haven't committed to blocking or supporting Gorsuch. Democrats also argue he poses a threat to women's reproductive rights. The company fired him for leaving a tractor trailer behind to seek help after the vehicle became inoperable in subzero temperatures. He won his case but Gorsuch wrote a dissenting opinion and Maddin told reporters it concerns him that he's the Supreme Court nominee.
