Andhra Pradesh: 20 killed as truck rams into shops in Chittoor district

The speeding Tirupati-bound lorry first hit an electric pole and then rammed into the crowd.

6 people lost their lives in collision, the others died of electrocution.

3 killed in shooting at Russian intelligence agency's office
Russia's FSB intelligence agency says three people were killed including the attacker and one wounded in an armed attack at its office in the Far East.

The farmers were outside a police station in Chittoor district, protesting against illegal sand mining. The driver and cleaner of the truck have been arrested. The truck came to a halt after destroying several vehicles and roadside shops, which were gutted in a fire that broke out in one of the shops due to impact of the accident.

The injured people were rushed to the SVR Ruia Government General Hospital in Tirupati and the government hospital of Srikalahasti. The condition of 10 of the injured is said to be critical.

Police from Chittoor said as per the preliminary information, the truck was carrying heavy load of crushed stones and travelling at high speed, hence lost control and ran over at least 20 persons. Meanwhile, Rs five lakh ex-gratia was announced by the state cabinet and CM directed both ministers - P Narayana and N Amarnath Reddy - to leave the cabinet meeting and reach the spot to support the victims. The Chief Inspector and Sub Inspector of the police station also suffered injuries.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Kamineni Srinivas instructed district officials to provide all support to the victims of the accident, including necessary medical treatment for those who have been injured.
