Cedarville U. could become first Ohio college to allow concealed carry

All institutions that allow faculty and staff to carry concealed weapons on campus.

The proposal would allow concealed carry on campus by faculty and staff who are licensed to carry concealed weapons.

Jim Irvine, board president of the Buckeye Firearms Association, a state gun rights group, said other colleges and universities in the state are having discussions over their own potential policy changes.

Knowing that the trustees would discuss concealed carry at their May meeting, Cedars conducted a student-wide survey in March to see how students felt about the possibility of the concealed carry policy changing on campus.

According to the University's President, Thomas White, they've been considering the move for more than a year.

The policy specifically "authorizes the President to grant permission to faculty, staff, and trustees with concealed carry licenses to carry a concealed handgun on campus under approved terms and/or conditions consistent with state law". We are very conservative.

Under Ohio law, this issue can now be decided by a school's board of trustees. We don't allow alcohol on campus and so it's a very safe campus and environment.

Although Cedarville University could become the first college in OH to allow some form of concealed carry on campus, school officials don't consider the move to be groundbreaking.
