13 May 2017

Tennis - ATP 1000 Masters - Madrid Open - Men's Singles Quarterfinal David Goffin of Belgium v Rafael Nadal of Spain - Madrid, Spain - 12/5/17 - Nadal celebrates at the end of match.

In Saturday's semifinal, Djokovic will play the victor of Friday's match between Belgian David Goffin and four-time victor and home favourite Rafael Nadal.

In a meeting between the players with the most match wins this year, Nadal saved all five break points he faced against the 10th-ranked Belgian, and converted his chances in the second set to win his 13th straight match.

Nadal claimed the first break in the second game of the second set and maintained his recent momentum to earn what was ultimately a comfortable win.

"It was a handsome game, we both played at the very highest level and there were great points for everyone to see", Nadal told Spanish Television. One of the most important and hot rivalries ever.

"I'm happy with the way I handled the pressure in those moments, just stayed with him, made him play always extra shot".

Nadal has won the last two tournaments in Monte Carlo and Barcelona and has made five finals in 2017, while Djokovic is making it past the quarter-final stage of a tournament for the first time since his win at the Doha Open in January.

Nadal and Djokovic are preparing for their 50th encounter against each other with the Serb holding a slim advantage over his long-time rival.

Djokovic could meet Nadal in the semi-finals.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nadal won the last of his four Madrid titles in 2014.

"It's going to be a very tough match against one of the best players in tennis history", Nadal said.

The Spaniard also dismissed the suggestion he had a stronger chance against Djokovic given the Serbian's slow start to the year.
