Comey Firing Won't Stop Russia Probe

17 May 2017

Trump is considering 11 people to replace Comey, a White House official said. I said if it's possible, would you let me know am I under investigation. "I was going to fire Comey". Not everyone agreed with each Comey decisions, but he was a popular and well-regarded director, they said.

The four are among almost a dozen candidates Mr Trump is considering, a group that includes several lawmakers, attorneys and law enforcement officials. Spokesman Sean Spicer said on Tuesday that Trump acted based on the recommendation of Sessions and Rosenstein.

McCabe testified it was not typical practise to tell a person they are not a target of an investigation.

Bringing up the idea of recorded conversations in the White House is the surest way to conjure what were once called "the Watergate horrors".

'New York Times' Reporter Offers Different Account Of Trump-Comey Dinner
The New York Times reported that the president asked Comey in January to pledge loyalty to him, which it said Comey refused to do. McCabe became acting director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation this week following Trump's abrupt firing of Comey.

McCabe, 49, had served as deputy director since February 2016 with Comey, where he has largely been focused on the Russian Federation investigation as well as a probe into Clinton's use of a private email server for government business while she served as secretary of state.

Later, the president and his advisers said Trump had planned to fire Comey since taking office. He also held leadership positions in counterterrorism and national security. Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, Republican Senator John Cornyn, New York Appeals Court Judge Michael Garcia and former Assistant Attorney General Alice Fisher will be interviewed on Saturday for the post, an administration official said.

Trump has repeatedly denied that he or his campaign had any ties to Russia, and this week even tweeted that the "Russia-Trump collusion story is a total hoax".

Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colorado, also released a statement today endorsing an independent investigation and referenced an April 21 interview with NBC's Chuck Todd in which he "bemoaned the politicization" of the House Intelligence Committee's investigation.

But he didn't pass up the opportunity to register his unhappiness about the cleric Fethullah Gulen , now living in Pennsylvania. Blake Hounshell, US editor of Politico magazine, laid the blame for the "insane" incident at the door of President Erdogan.

Trump dismissed the FBI director citing his handling of the probe into Hillary Clinton's emails, but opponents suspect his ouster was a bid to stall the Russian Federation investigation, which is also looking into possible collusion between the Kremlin and Trump's team. His dismissal of a special prosecutor, Archibald Cox, who subpoenaed the White House for the president's tapes marked the beginning of the end of his presidency. "And we think that we've actually, by removing Director Comey, taken steps to make that happen".

Wallace added the lack of communication within the White House over Comey's firing was an issue that demonstrated Trump's lack of trust in his own people-possibly explaining why there was no one willing to talk through the surprise sacking on the shows.

Responding to a question, Trump said he met the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the request of President Vladimir Putin. That much has been confirmed by US intelligence agencies. Attorney General Sessions recused himself from the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe, but also advised Trump to fire Comey, adding to questions voiced about the administration's aims.

"Even that is possible", Trump said, speaking on Air Force One before departing for Lynchburg, Virginia, where he delivered a commencement address.

Trump urged halt to Flynn probe, former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's notes say
According to Comey's memo, the president said: "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go". Comey shared the existence of the memo with senior F.B.I. officials and close associates.
