Burr says Flynn lawyers told committee he won't honor subpoena for documents

The Senate's intelligence committee had asked Flynn - President Trump's former national security adviser - in April to turn over documents relevant to the committee's investigation into Trump campaign associates' connections to Russian Federation. "Consistent with the committee's position since the beginning of or investigation, I welcome their willingness to cooperate", Burr said.

Flynn previously refused to turn over the documents to Senate Intelligence Committee prompting the subpoena in the first place.

Burr's initial announcement prompted many folks on Twitter to say the move meant that Flynn could end up in jail: contempt of Congress! Richard Burr of North Carolina.

The subpoena was widely seen as intensifyying the Senate's months-long investigation into alleged Russian meddling and was the first subpoena issued by the committee relating to the Russia investigation.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has blamed the Obama administration for not sufficiently vetting Flynn, pointing out that Flynn had a security clearance under the previous president.

The Senate committee issued the subpoena for Flynn's records on May 10 after he declined to cooperate with an April 28 request for documents.

US stocks rose as upbeat economic data emboldened investors to return to the market on Thursday, a day after Wall Street saw its worst selloff in eight months on worries that the political turmoil could sideline Trump initiatives such as tax cuts that investors see as favoring economic growth.

If Flynn does refuse to comply with the subpoena, the Committee has two basic choices: let it go or pursue contempt remedies against Flynn.
