Donald Trump told Michael Flynn to "stay strong" amid growing scandal

As stock markets across the world fell in response to the latest crisis to engulf the leader of the world's largest economy, the White House struggled to contain the fallout from a New York Times report that Mr Trump tried to sway an FBI investigation into former national security adviser Mike Flynn.

At issue is a note Comey wrote to himself describing a conversation with Trump on February 14, the day after Flynn was dismissed for having misled Vice President Mike Pence about a telephone conversation with Russia's ambassador. Trump has been dismissive of investigations of his campaign's links to Russian Federation, saying that claims of Moscow's meddling in the election to help him win are an excuse by Democrats to explain his upset win over former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, on Wednesday said the committee planned to invite Comey to testify during a public hearing next week.

If Trump does have taped conversations with Comey, they may well end up as part of an investigation into whether he fired Comey because he wouldn't end the Russia-related investigations.

On Tuesday, the House intelligence committee also requested similar documents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
