Google VR Headsets Will Be Untethered And Fully Tracked

On the hardware front, you have the standalone headsets that Google's partnering with Qualcomm, Lenovo and HTC that will be debuting later this year. The new devices won't require a phone or PC and will be made available to consumers later this year.

During their annual developer conference, Google announced the release of a new generation of their Daydream virtual reality (VR) headset. The new fully self-contained "standalone" Daydream VR headsets will use the new tech to allow for positional tracking which Google says "dramatically" improves the experience compared to prior Daydream devices (and we agree, good positional tracking is a huge benefit to immersion and comfort in VR).

Google released a trailer to see the WorldSense technology in action. Unlike Facebook, Google plans to get VR to ease into regular activities like teaching. For starters, the update is coming to all headsets and supported handsets. With this technology, the Google VR headset can understand the distance, track the motion and also create a position for the user in the real world.

Daydream 2.0 will add a dashboard on top of any VR experience so you can check notifications, change settings, pause experiences, and most importantly switch from application to application as you do on your smartphone. This means that the user will be able to share his/her VR experience from his/her headset with others through a compatible Smart TV. This seems an terrible lot similar to Facebook Spaces.

There is still no word on pricing for these headsets, and that remains the biggest stumbling block for mainstream adoption of VR. "Chrome VR, which will make it possible to browse the web in virtual reality, is coming to Daydream this summer".
