Patients no longer being turned away from A&E departments after cyber attack

It said: 'There were no infected computers in North East GP practices and the priority through this worldwide malware incident was to protect the NHS computer network, clinical systems and patient data - and this was done very successfully. However, a spokesperson said they are now operating as normal with no disruption to appointments and services.

The malicious software behind the onslaught appeared to exploit a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows that was supposedly identified by the National Security Agency for its own intelligence-gathering purposes and was later leaked to the internet.

But Theresa May rejected claims the Government ignored warnings the NHS was vulnerable to a possible cyber attack, saying warnings had been given to hospital trusts.

Professor Clark said more information on protecting your computer was available via the IT security company Sophos and the National Cyber Security Centre, among other sources.

The NHS has provided an update about planned treatment and outpatient appointments following the ransomware attack on its IT systems.

"These alerts included a patch to protect their systems".

Elsewhere in Asia, the impact seems to have been more limited.
