President Trump to meet 4 candidates for post of FBI director

19 May 2017

Other candidates considered included current acting Director Andrew McCabe, former Oklahoma Gov. and FBI Agent Frank Keating, career FBI official Richard McFeely and Texas Sen.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters on Wednesday that President Donald Trump is meeting with Keating and three other candidates on Wednesday afternoon.

Asked how close he is to making an announcement, Trump said, "soon". The president sets off Friday on his inaugural overseas trip and will be out of the country for more than a week.

One source told Politico that Trump bonded with Lieberman in their interview for the position, and he was leaning towards the him in the immediate aftermath. Comey was leading the investigation into whether Trump's campaign and his associates worked with Russian Federation to swing the 2016 election. The president fired Comey, who had held the position since 2013, last Tuesday and has been considering candidates for Comey's replacement since then. Affiliates of Comey now say he believes that Trump was trying to thwart the progress of that inquiry- a charge tantamount to obstruction of justice, an impeachable offense. John McCain (R-Ariz.), said he would be "overjoyed" if Lieberman, who is a friend of his, were picked.

Senators: Deputy AG knew of Comey firing before writing memo
Richard Blumenthal said Mueller has to have the leeway to conduct the investigation and "follow the evidence wherever it leads". Republican Jason Chaffetz of Utah, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said Mueller was a "great selection".

Lieberman represented CT in the Senate from 1989 to 2013, initially as a Democrat.

"We'll get rid of the smoke and see where the actual issues lie", said Sen.

Lieberman is no stranger to Washington, serving three terms as a CT senator, twice as a Democrat and once as an Independent.

Lieberman is perhaps most famous for joining the ticket with Gore in his unsuccessful run for president in the 2000 election. There's no suggestion Lieberman is dishonest, and his background as Connecticut's attorney general certainly gives him some qualifications to lead America's top law-enforcement agency. Lieberman added that McFarland "and General Mike Flynn will form a very strong leadership team at the National Security Council".

Special Envoy Moon Meets with Japanese Leader
A special envoy representing Moon is due to visit China on today for talks on THAAD and the overall bilateral relationship. But analysts warned that Moon will have a hard path to weave, with THAAD already near fully operational.

Lieberman served 24 years as a CT senator before retiring in 2013. Mr Lieberman testified in support of Mr Sessions at his January confirmation hearing.

But Lieberman lost his senate seat to a primary challenger in 2006, and he ran as an independent to retain his seat. He has served as co-chairman of No Labels, a centrist group that promotes bipartisanship.

Keating, the governor of Oklahoma during the 1994 bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City, left the White House with a smile on Wednesday.

Amnesty said the executions took place between 2011 and 2015, but were probably still being carried out and amounted to war crimes.
