Joe Lieberman, the White House said Wednesday. The White House said Friday that Trump will not announce a candidate before he leaves the country. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) expressed "great admiration" for the former senator, Sen. Joe Lieberman was among his top candidates.

A Nov 25 news release from Mr Trump's transition team quoted Mr Lieberman praising Mr Trump's selection of Mr K T McFarland as deputy national security adviser.

Several senior White House officials told reporters at both Politico and CNN that Lieberman, a former Democratic senator from CT who now identifies as an Independent, was the frontrunner for the job.

The three other men Trump interviewed for the post were former Oklahoma Gov. The White House has denied that Trump asked the former FBI director to conclude the Flynn investigation and has challenged reports that Trump revealed sensitive information to the two Russian diplomats. McCabe became acting director after Trump fired James Comey as director last week.

The Justice Department has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to oversee a federal investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign to influence the 2016 presidential election.

On Wednesday, the department appointed former FBI director Robert Mueller to serve as special counsel for the investigation. His appointment will need to be confirmed by a majority vote in the Senate.

Lieberman served in the Senate from 1989 through 2013. A day earlier, Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of SC also said he didn't want to be considered. He's also a Democrat, and while Lieberman was respected by both major parties throughout his tenure, his past affiliation may cause trouble during the confirmation process.

Senator Richard Blumenthal, who succeeded Lieberman to his CT seat, didn't specifically comment on his predecessor, but generally agreed with McCaskill.

Trump had previously said in a TV interview that he had the Russian Federation probe on his mind when he fired Comey. Trump has reacted furiously to the appointment but Democrats and even many Republicans have generally welcomed it.

Lieberman served as U.S. Senator from CT from 1989 to 2013.

But Lieberman, 75, is not necessarily popular with Democrats. He also backed Republican Sen. John McCain, and did not seek re-election in 2012.

Most well-known for the eight years (1995 to 2003) he served as Oklahoma's governor, Keating also has spent some time in the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Gore/Lieberman ended up losing the 2000 presidential election to then-presidential candidate George W. Bush and candidate for vice president, Dick Cheney.

In recent testimony before Congress, Mr. McCabe rejected the White House criticism that rank-and-file agents had lost faith in Mr. Comey.
