Trump Spins Yet Another Narrative Onto Comey Firing

'Thank you, Huma. Good job, Huma, ' Trump said in MI days before his stunning election win.

Senators said that Rosenstein steered clear of specifics while making clear that Mueller has wide latitude to pursue the investigation wherever it leads, including potentially criminal charges.

"There is no collusion between certainly myself and my campaign - but I can only speak for myself - and the Russians".

US Speaker of the House Paul Ryan speaks to the press about President Donald Trump, former FBI Director James Comey and Russian Federation investigations as Republican Conference Chairman Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R) looks on after a closed meeting of the Republican leadership of the House of Representatives on Capitol Hill in Washington, US May 17, 2017.

Asked if he thought he had committed a crime or impeachable offense, the president said "it's totally ridiculous, everyone thinks so".

"No. No. Next question", Trump responded curtly to a reporter during a news conference with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Thursday afternoon. But before the reporter had the chance to finish his question, Trump interrupted him with an assertive "no" and said "next question".

Trump also appeared to be unhappy with press reports about shifting White House explanations of Comey's firing. The FBI chief had confided he was concerned it might compromise his Trump-Russia inquiry, said Mr Clapper.

He said he respected the special counsel appointment but also said it "hurts our country terribly". Trump wrote on Thursday morning.

The president's tweets drew little reaction from fellow Republicans, who instead joined Democrats in heaping praise on Mueller, a longtime respected lawman who served under George W. Bush and Barack Obama, preceding Comey as head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!" added Trump.

Trump's comments come after a brutal week-plus for the White House triggered by his firing of Comey, and near-daily bombshells about Flynn's shady activities, Trump's own continuing defense of his former top aide, and the evolving story from the White House about why Trump fired Comey.

Several members leaving the meeting said the deputy attorney general was aware of Comey's pending termination before he penned the letter to Trump.

"Truly, I get this impression that many USA media are working in this vein".

The person who described the Comey memo was not authorised to discuss it by name and spoke on condition of anonymity. And that, they said, could lead down a road that ends with the president's ouster - but that the facts aren't in yet.

Republicans on Capitol Hill hoped the same, reasoning that the appointment of a special counsel could free them to work on a major tax overhaul and other matters without constant distractions.

"I hope you can let this go", Mr Trump reportedly told Mr Comey. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said that Rosenstein knew before making his recommendation to Trump that the president would fire Comey.

The New York Times had recently reported on a memo, allegedly written by Mr Comey, claiming Mr Trump had asked him to drop the investigation during a private meeting at the White House.

"When I chose to just do it I said to myself, I said, 'You know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story, '" Mr Trump told NBC's Lester Holt.

A key issue Mueller may have to tackle is whether Trump has committed obstruction of justice, an offence that could be used in any effort in Congress to impeach him and remove him from office.
