What Trump says Comey told him about being cleared

19 May 2017

- President Donald Trump warned ousted FBI Director James Comey on Friday against talking to the media, suggesting there might be tapes of conversations between the two men that could contradict his account.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Monday, a majority of Americans, including a growing number of Republicans, want to see an "independent investigation" to sort out any connections between Russian Federation and Trump during the 2016 election campaign.

"I know that I'm not under investigation, me personally", Trump said.

McCabe also pointed out the remarkable nature of Trump's version of his conversations with Comey.

Capping a week in which Trump faced a slew of criticism for firing the man investigating his campaign's possible ties to Russia, Trump told James Comey there could be retribution if he tells the press about their private conversations.

His comment again raised the specter of Richard Nixon, whose secretly taped conversations and telephone calls in the White House ultimately led to his downfall in the Watergate scandal.

During his Oval Office meeting with Lavrov and Kislyak, Trump went off-script and began describing details about an ISIL threat related to the use of laptop computers on aircraft, the officials said. "I think the White House needs to be open and transparent about whats going on, too". Thirty two percent of survey respondents said they had no opinion of Trump's decision to fire America's chief law enforcement officer.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders attributed the disconnect in the week's explanations to the fact that she had not directly asked President Trump when he'd made the decision to fire Comey until shortly before Thursday's press briefing. Some senior officials have discussed nominating Rep. Trey Gowdy, the South Carolina Republican who ran the House committee that investigated Secretary of State Clinton's actions in connection with the 2012 attack on a USA compound in Benghazi, Libya.

Leaders of the congressional investigations into Russian meddling into the U.S. election previous year are also calling on Comey to testify.

Clapper, however, qualified his testimony by saying he had been unaware of an FBI investigation into the matter until Comey announced it to the public at a House hearing in March.

Asked about the disclosures, Trump's national security adviser, HR McMaster, who participated in the meeting, said no intelligence sources or methods were discussed that were not already known publicly, the Post reported. I need to see it sooner rather than later.

He added: "It would be in everyone's best interest to get to the bottom of this".

Trump and Comey's relationship was strained early on, in part because of the president's explosive and unsubstantiated claims that Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower. He is the one who must hope there are no tapes. And though the White House has asserted Comey lost the backing of rank-and-file agents, McCabe flatly said, "that is not accurate".

But mounting evidence suggests Comey was actually fired because of the Russian Federation probe.

Trump said the discussions happened in two phone calls and at a dinner in which Comey was asking to keep his job.

"I think we ought to get to the bottom line here: President Trump is risky", Durbin told MSNBC, the cable news channel.

But he also said, "In fact when I made a decision to just do it, I said to myself, I said you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won".

Meanwhile, the Senate's No. 2 Democrat, Dick Durbin of IL, said Friday that Trump was "dangerous" and that "his credibility has been destroyed".

"As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with flawless accuracy!" he tweeted. Trump tweeted. "Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future "press briefings" and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy???"
