UK police say Assange still faces arrest

20 May 2017

He has been there ever since, fearing that if he is in custody he might ultimately be extradited to the United States. On 16 December 2010, the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court made a decision to release Julian Assange on bail. "In order to proceed with the case, Julian Assange would have to be formally notified of the criminal suspicions against him", part of the statement reads.

"Detained for 7 years without charge by while my children grew up and my name was slandered. I do not forgive or forget".

The WikiLeaks founder's lawyer filed a request at Stockholm District Court earlier in May asking for an end to the arrest warrant against his client, arguing it should be dropped now that the U.S. has expressed a desire to charge the 45-year-old. "The UK has said it will arrest me regardless".

"It is time to call out WikiLeaks for what it really is - a non-state hostile intelligence service" often aided by nations such as Russia, Mr Pompeo said April 13 in his first public speech after becoming head of the agency.

He gave a clenched fist salute to his supporters, and scores of journalists and TV crews, before maintaining that a "legal conflict" with the United States and the UK continues. "That is not acceptable".

The dropping of Sweden's charges come just days after whistleblower Chelsea Manning was released from prison, where she had been serving a 35-year sentence for leaking over 725,000 secret government and military documents to WikiLeaks.

Upon Marianne Ny's landmark announcement, an ebullient Assange took to Twitter to tweet his beaming visage, and his Swedish lawyer, Per Samuelsson, told local media the development was a "total victory", which meant Assange was "free to leave the embassy whenever he wants".

Is he facing U.S. charges?

Both U.S. and British officials have declined to comment on whether there is a warrant for Assange's arrest.

People gather outside the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Friday May 19, 2017.

The Swedish authorities' decision to drop the investigations ends a seven-year impasse with Assange.

Has Assange been questioned by Swedish prosecutors? . Until then, the police had been keeping a 24-hour-watch outside the embassy in the upscale Knightsbridge area, ready to arrest him if he tried to leave. "The UK no longer has any legitimate basis to interfere with Ecuador's lawful decision".

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on Friday saw the rape investigation against him dropped by the Swedish Prosecution Authority.

It is no longer possible to continue the preliminary investigation pursuant to Chapter 23, Section 4, second paragraph, of the Code of Judicial Procedure.

Marianne Ny told a news conference: "When we investigate serious crimes, we do not consider the costs". "So we won't make any statements on the issue of guilt". "Evidence in the case is available and that evidence should have been tested in court". Elisabeth Massi Fritz says her client is shocked but adds that "she can't change her view that Assange has exposed her to a rape".

Assange's lawyers petition Sweden's Supreme Court to quash the arrest warrant.

CNN is not naming the alleged victim whom Fritz represents. Because Assange refused to surrender to British authorities in June 2012, the Metropolitan Police in London have a warrant out for his arrest, and have said they would feel "obliged" to execute that warrant if Assange sets foot on British soil.

"Mr Assange remains wanted for a much less serious offence", it said.
