'Pirates of the Caribbean 5' sails into new franchise waters

25 May 2017

The Cairns-born 27-year-old Thwaites holds his own in the star-studded cast headed by Johnny Depp and Oscar winners Geoffrey Rush and Javier Bardem. Directed by Joaquin Rønning and Espen Sandberg, the film is packed full of the usual gags and, at times, risqué one-liners, but you'd be pressed to find anything resembling Gore Verbinski's brilliantly nuanced original material in this. It's a definitely a pleasant surprise after the lackluster On Stranger Tides. Kaya Scoledario is handsome, funny, and tough as Carina Smyth.

Johnny Depp's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" is poised to dominate Memorial Day moviegoing, while Dwayne Johnson's "Baywatch" should deliver decent results during the holiday.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge will be screened on Friday and will run until June 3.

If I finish my career tomorrow I should be very happy with my experience but the problem is my career just reached the halfway stage.

POTC5 tries to remedy this by bringing back the whole Turner/Swann angle and by expanding the character's backstory a little, but there is still too much reliance on drunken Jack antics to move things along, which can be tiresome in a movie that clocks in at 2 hours 33 minutes. Year-to-date results are up 2.5% to $4.31 billion, according to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScor, who also noted that summer results are off almost 10% compared with the 2016 summer. Thankfully the Hermione-esque Carina Smyth (Skins' Kaya Scodelario) is a sea breeze of fresh air, mirroring the Keria Knightley role as a strong presence.

"No matter how the critics respond, it will be the moviegoers who have the ultimate power to make this film a hit and Johnny Depp could see a return to form after a series of box office disappointments and, unfortunately, very publicly exposed personal issues", said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst for comScore.

While all this may sound like there's a lot going on in Dead Men, there really isn't. (Not that Captain Jack has ever been in the league of these comics.) If you've heard the dialogue Depp had to speak in Tides, you'll probably find it less amusing that, in this latest, he was reportedly fed his lines through an earpiece under his wig.

Those who are advising the Americans are unfortunately rulers who deviate America with unsound advice or buy some influence in the U.S. with their money", he said.

Jack's introduction, for example, is one of the best set pieces in the entire series, period. Which I think is a pretty accurate summation of the job of screenwriting in general. I'll bet even the other undead pirates aboard Salazar's ship spend their downtime talking about the Captain's spooky eccentricities.

"Brian Truitt, USA Today: "...has its rocky moments but also offers an engaging tale with family legacies, above-average swashbuckling and a fantastic new villain courtesy of Javier Bardem". Continuing he adds, "You want audiences to come to this movie for the humour, the humanity, the exciting action and the fun scary elements but it is also great storytelling with great characters".

(It's about 50 minutes shorter than the interminable "At World's End.") From a ridiculous and wildly entertaining bank robbery scene early on when the entire bank, i.e., the building itself, is taken, through a thrilling finale involving a "Ten Commandments"-style parting of the waters, "Dead Men Tell No Tales" might as well have been titled, "Go Big or Go Home".
