Sources say Comey acted on Russian intelligence he knew was fake

29 May 2017

On July 5, 2016, Comey announced, without notifying the Justice Department, that the FBI was closing the investigation in Clinton's emails and that there would be no prosecution of the former secretary of state and Democratic presidential nominee.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has refused Congress' request to turn over the memos that sacked Director James Comey wrote in which he detailed his interactions with President Donald Trump. His press conference caused a firestorm of controversy and drew criticism from both Democrats and Republicans.

Chaffetz made his initial request for documents after a New York Times report that Comey had written in a memo that Trump asked him to halt an FBI investigation into ties between former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn and Russian officials.

The FBI reportedly had doubts about the document, and by August, they determined it was fake.

House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Adam Schiff argued Wednesday that having all their hearings away from public view would make any conclusion they come to less credible to the public.

The Russian intelligence at issue purported to show that then-Attorney General Lynch had been compromised in the Clinton investigation.

Chaffetz also stressed that the Committee's investigation has a focus that considers the independence of the FBI, which he says would include communications between Trump and Comey. Comey's reasoning, according to the CNN report, was that he feared if the document became public, it would undermine the investigation.

In that briefing, Comey did not even mention the other reason he gave in public testimony for acting independently of the Justice Department - that Lynch was compromised because Bill Clinton boarded her plane and spoke to her during the investigation, these sources told CNN.

Comey's decision to blast Clinton over the email issue - as well as his curious decision to publicly discuss details of the case days before the election - had a major impact on the elections.
