While he did reach the 2016 U.S. Open final, he was eliminated in the third round at Wimbledon a year ago and in the second round of this season's Australian Open.

Neither player could engineer a break point in the second set, with Isner racing 5-0 up in the tie-break and forcing a decider despite seeing two of his three set points get away from him.

The 29-year-old reached the semi-finals of last week's Madrid Open Masters before the finals loss at Rome.
