New Nest camera zooms in and recognizes faces

01 June 2017

On Tuesday, the company formally unveiled the product under the name Nest Cam IQ, complete with indoor security features that it claims do not compromise on capturing object or motion detail in mission-critical situations. The new device brings several advancements over the Nest Cam Indoor, though it also adds a few pounds to the price tag, which could make the decision between the two a little tricky.

I'll have to wait until I get my hands on the Nest Cam IQ to see if its "zoom to enhance" and handful of new intelligent features are worth the upgrade over the Nest Cam Indoor/Outdoor, but based on my brief playtime with it, I have a hunch it is.

"When designing Nest Cam IQ, we focused on what we've learned from our customers, which is that people don't want more information, they want insights". For audio input, the camera has a trio of microphones with noise and echo cancellation. It's a clear relation to the Nest Cam Outdoor, with its cup-like body and black glass fascia, though it's not created to be used outdoors. First came a 1080p indoor security camera, the Nest Cam Indoor, which was followed a year later by the. For remote communication, the Nest Cam IQ has a built-in speaker and a three-microphone array.

The Nest Cam IQ has a 4K video sensor for capturing footage, but it isn't using that additional resolution to provide you with really high quality footage of your cat wandering around your living room while you're at work.

Like the new model, there is a 130-degree field of view and it will record up to 1080p at 30fps, but there is no enhancement or close up tracking like the Nest Cam IQ. The camera will also be used to transmit messages from the user through the speaker, but only as a walkie-talkie.

The camera is available in white, weighs only 12 ounces, includes night vision and has Wi-Fi connection capability. Audio alerts are also being made available to Nest Cam and Nest Cam Outdoor owners via Nest Aware.

It is not true to say this feature is unique to Nest Cam IQ - Netatmo, notably, has been pushing it for years - but with Google's faintly terrifying face-recognition software underpinning it, Nest's application of it looks sound.

The Finn finished second with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo completing the podium. "We couldn't plan much", said Vettel. Today it was a really exciting race ". "The safety auto almost ruined my race ", said Ricciardo.

There's a light ring around the front of the camera which can illuminate different colors depending on what state the camera is in. The subscription service has two tiers: a 10-day video history or a 30-day video history.
