German Chancellor Angela Merkel vows more decisive action than ever on climate

Trump has said the USA would "cease all implementation" of the agreement.

The headline on the Xinhua web site was "US quitting Paris climate deal leaves world shaking its head" while the Global Times, a bellwether for popular opinion in China, said leaving the accord highlighted the US's "selfishness and irresponsibility", which would seriously damage the US's world leadership.

United States President Donald Trump has confirmed that the USA will quit the Paris Agreement on Climate Change to "negotiate a fairer deal" for his nation, which is the world's second largest emitter of greenhouse gasses.

An Exxon spokesman said the 2015 accord was "critical" given the rising emissions from India and China.

"As president, I can put no other consideration before the well-being of American citizens. Thus as of today, the United States will cease all implementation of the non-binding Paris accord and the draconian financial and economic burdens the agreement imposes on our country".

"Even if the Paris Agreement were implemented in full, with total compliance from all nations, it is estimated it would only produce a two-tenths of one degree Celsius reduction in global temperature by the year 2100", Trump said.

Trump, who has called climate change a hoax, said his administration would begin negotiations either to re-enter the Paris accord or to have a new agreement "on terms that are fair to the United States, its businesses, its workers, its people, its taxpayers".

"We don't want other leaders and other countries laughing at us any more - and they won't be", he said.

But she faced fierce criticism for failing to add her name to the joint statement by President Emmanuel Macron, Chancellor Angela Merkel and Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni. A statement slated to be presented at a meeting says that "the European Union and China consider climate action and clean energy transition an imperative more important than ever".

Though China's stance has changed little, its diplomatic position was enhanced first in Paris, where joint pledges made by Presidents Barack Obama and Xi Jinping helped push the deal over the line, and now by its efforts to keep the Paris agreement in play in the face of US opposition.

China has emerged as Europe's unlikely partner in this and other areas - underlining Trump's isolation on many issues.

"China recognises that the transition to clean energy is the biggest market opportunity in this century", Finamore said.

Russian Federation struck a rare negative note.

"Climate change is a global challenge and no country can stay away from it", said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying.

Other deadlines for the decision presented by President Donald Trump's administration have passed without any action. Some northern European countries are criticizing the USA for its expected withdrawal from the Paris climate accords.

Iger served on Trump's Strategic and Policy Forum, a group of business leaders who offer the president advice.

Despite this, a number of figures from U.S. industry expressed their dismay at Trump's move.

Before and during his campaign for the presidency, Trump repeatedly denied that climate change was real. "Industry must now lead and not depend on government".

Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, announced his departure from Trump's advisory councils upon the announcement.

Trump said Washington would not honour its carbon-cutting contribution, nor worldwide climate finance commitments made under his predecessor Barack Obama.

Arnie also says that leaders from around the country will "rise-up" in rebellion over Trumps climate attitude.
