United Kingdom star Cynthia Erivo, who won the Tony for best performance by a lead actress past year, returned to present an award alongside John Legend.

News Week also reported about other notable jabs at the current US administration during the 2017 Tony Awards, including one from Cynthia Nixon who accepted her Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play in Little Foxes.

The legendary entertainer previously won a special award for her contribution to Broadway way back in 1974, but Sunday night's accolade marked the first competitive Tony Award of her six decade-long career - and like and like any true diva, The Divine Miss M made sure she made the most of her moment in the spotlight. The show also was awarded Best Featured Actress for Rachel Bay Jones, Best Book, Best Orchestrations and Best Original Score for Benji Pasek, who is Jewish and Justin Paul who won an Oscar this year for "La La Land". Appearing as his "House of Cards" character Frank Underwood, he wisecracked that he'd better leave, "before Bette Midler thanks anyone else". It won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and seven Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Musical.

Rebecca Taichman won best directing play honors for "Indecent". Nixon was one of the most politically outspoken winners, giving a shout-out to people who refuse to just stand by and watch when bad things happen in the world.

Other winners included August Wilson's "Jitney," which collected the Tony for best play revival. In an interview, he said he had enjoyed both Spacey and the ceremony, even though he hadn't had time to see this year's nominated shows yet.

Groban reminded the former vice president that Biden had once told him he has him on his iPod playlist, and he'd never forgotten that. "I'm Broadway bound", he sang. "And then to be representing my show and performing tonight - I just had the best time".

Republicans take a big political risk on health care
A GOP aide familiar with the negotiations characterized the meeting as likely a red light, green light, yellow light situation. But something was served at the lunch that gave Republicans who'd been queasy about cuts to Medicaid a new appetite for them.
