US Refuses to Sign G7 Climate Pledge

14 June 2017

On Friday, German news magazine Der Spiegel published a story suggesting Trudeau had "switched to appeasement" of the Trump administration during a phone conversation with Merkel on Tuesday. Rather, it says that the accord is "the global instrument for effectively and urgently tackling climate change and adapting to its effects". However, if the US were to hew to its Paris commitment, emissions would need to drop far more.

"The United States will continue to show leadership by offering action-oriented solutions to the world's environmental challenges", he said. It then states that they "also discussed the upcoming G20 summit".

Pruitt's departure on Sunday was planned, his spokesman Lincoln Ferguson said, and "senior staff" at the agency would remain part of the two-day meeting, which continued on Monday.

Instead, the USA was mentioned in a footnote touting its goals of a "strong" economy and "healthy" environment, and which implied it had already met climate goals.

Jeff Sessions Pushes Back On Suggestions Of Collusion
As attorney general, Sessions is unlikely to answer in detail questions about conversations he's had with Trump. In general, as with most of the Russia-related hearings conducted by Congress, it was a tale of two parties.

The other countries told Pruitt they were disappointed that the U.S. withdrew from the Paris Agreement, Germany's environment minister Barbara Hendricks said in a statement sent to BuzzFeed News.

As a result, the USA said it would not join those sections of the communique on climate and multilateral development banks.

If the US follows through with its pledge to formally withdraw from the pact, which can not happen formally until November 4, 2020, the country would join just two others-Syria and Nicaragua-as non-parties to the agreement.

Kerry noted that the formal withdrawal process from the Paris Agreement will last four years from the date it entered into force, on November 4, 2016.

Men threw avocados at deli employee, breaking his jaw, police say
The pair had reportedly caused a scene after a deli worker who doesn't speak English couldn't understand their food order. After being viciously pelted with both avocados and bananas, the 21-year-old bodega clerk was taken to Lincoln Hospital.

PRESIDENT Donald Trump's plan to withdraw the United States of America from the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change is a setback for the efforts of responsible countries trying to reduce carbon emissions. Yamamoto told Pruitt he wants to work with the USA within the Paris framework. The minister from Italy, which holds the G7 presidency, says they are making progress. Following that meeting, the other members of the group agreed to reaffirm their support of the Paris deal. The US noted that it did not join the sections of the statement on climate action and climate aid. In recent years USA greenhouse-gas emissions have started to taper off; instead of trying to fulfill the U.S. pledge to cut emissions by a quarter to 28% below 2005 levels by 2025, Trump intends to reverse the ambitious environmental course charted under his predecessor Barack Obama.

To get there, Ottawa plans to phase out coal-fired energy, impose carbon pricing regimes on the provinces and regulate methane emissions, among other measures.

House Bill 1578, which creates a task force to help keep Hawaii's soil and air clean, was also signed by the governor.

"Let's be clear - the U.S.is bigger than one administration and we're going to be moving forward, as is the rest of the world, with the states, cities and businesses in the United States that are committed to serious climate action and committed to the Paris Agreement".
