Meet The DOJ Official Who Could Take Over The Trump Investigation

17 June 2017

President Donald Trump on Friday appeared to suggest a path toward getting rid of special counsel Robert Mueller - by first ousting the man who put Mueller there, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

If the report is true and if it is confirmed that Trump obstructed justice by trying to get former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey, and perhaps others, to end the Russian Federation probe, that could lead to the President's impeachment by Congress, something that many Democratic lawmakers say they would pursue if circumstances warrant.

This week, Trump also attacked what he called a "phony story" in the Washington Post that said Mueller's investigation had been expanded to include an inquiry into whether Trump's firing of Comey amounted to an illegal attempt to obstruct justice.

It was unclear if Trump was referencing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein or Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Rosenstein stepped in after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself earlier this year over previously undisclosed meetings with the Russian ambassador to the U.S.

Trump pledges infrastructure action in OH as Comey crisis swirls
President Donald Trump will discuss his plans for a $1 trillion overhaul of the nation's crumbling roads, bridges and waterways during a speech in Ohio Wednesday.

"President Trump is hurting his own case every time he goes on [Twitter]", said a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Democrat Patrick Leahy of Vermont, on MSNBC.

Former FBI Director James Comey testifies before a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on "Russian Federation Efforts to Interfere in the 2016 U.S. Elections" on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S. June 8, 2017.

Vice President Mike Pence sent out this tweet shortly after the rant.

Earlier this week, a close friend of the president's indicated Trump is considering firing Mueller.

Rosenstein wrote a three-page memo on May 9 criticizing Comey for his handling of the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's use of a private server while in office.

In another tweet Friday morning, Trump said it's "sad" that seven months of investigations and hearings into possible links between his campaign and Russian Federation have been fruitless.

Trump's tweet appears to be a reference to a memo Rosenstein issued shortly after assuming his position in the DOJ. The transition, a nonprofit structurally separate from the Trump campaign, continues to operate with a small staff. The memo asks for preservation of electronic communications and data, telephone logs, audio recordings, videos, calendars and other items.

"I can go around them", Trump tweeted.

As recently as Monday morning, the panel on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" ripped Trump for his continuous rants on Twitter, with co-host Mika Brzezinski saying, "He can't help himself".

He had likened the appointment of the special counsel with the "single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history".
