The Republican baseball team was practicing early Wednesday ahead of an annual charity game when a gunman who had ranted against President Trump opened fire wounding Scalise and others in the ball field outside Washington.

More on this as it develops.

When the Representative entered MedStar Washington Hospital after a mass shooting at a Congressional baseball practice, his surgeon said, he was "as critical as he could be".

"The major initial risk to life is because of the hemorrhage", which doctors now have under control, Sava said.

But Mr. Scalise is expected to recover. Although "infection is a significant risk", the physician said, "an excellent recovery is a good possibility".

President Donald Trump shared a message Thursday night prior to the Congressional Baseball game at Nationals Park, saying the fact that the game was still being played was sending a message to the world "that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults on our democracy". "I would encourage you to talk to your military-medical colleagues about what it means to be shot with a high-velocity rifle in the hip region, because most of us would not even think to consider that a benign wound".

Supporters of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., hold signs before the Congressional baseball game, Thursday, June 15, 2017, in Washington. Richmond, who plays for the Democratic team, said he had visited the hospital multiple times.

Hodgkinson, who had lashed out on social media against Trump and Republicans, was shot and killed by police officers including members of Scalise's security detail who responded.

Sava said that after being released from the hospital, Scalise "will require a period of healing and rehabilitation".

When Scalise arrived at Washington Hospital Center, a Level I Trauma Center, on Wednesday he underwent immediate surgery, receiving multiple units of blood transfusion, according to the hospital. "And we thank all the members of Alexandria Fire, Police and Rescue", Trump said.

Scalise's Chief of Staff Brett Horton also read a statement from Scalise's wife, Jennifer.

Scalise sustained serious injuries as the bullet traveled through his pelvis and injured internal organs.

Sava also said Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner, who was also transported to the MedStar facility is now, "in good condition and she's in good spirits".

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
