Cosby was accused of drugging and sexually violating Andrea Constand at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004.

Jurors deliberated more than 52 hours over six days before a judge declared a mistrial for the 79-year-old comedian on Saturday.

VETERAN American entertainer Bill Cosby walked home a freeman yesterday after a USA judge declared a mistrial in his sex assault case.

Kristina Ruehli said she "was particularly nauseated" with a statement Saturday from Cosby's wife, Camille, criticizing prosecutors, the judge and media.

The trial has irrevocably damaged the legacy of Cosby, once a towering figure in United States popular culture best known for his seminal role as a lovable father and obstetrician on hit 1984-92 TV series The Cosby Show.

A decade later, a new district attorney reopened the case after Cosby's lurid testimony became public and dozens of women came forward against him. "Bill Cosby's rape case", said Armour, who teaches at the University of South California. O'Neill instructed them to keep working toward a unanimous decision. For the last few years, his TV shows, films, and recorded stand-up performances, one-time broadcast staples, have been considered too toxic to touch, and with the mistrial, they are likely to remain so. "I feel bad for all of you, I really do". He pleaded not guilty to three counts of aggravated indecent assault on Constand at his home near Philadelphia in January 2004.

He said prosecutors felt good about the case, but "there's always tweaks".

Legal experts had always warned that the "he said, she said" nature of the case was going to be hard to prove in court, not least because it happened so long ago and lacked physical evidence.

Chloe Goins, a former model who said Mr Cosby drugged and sexually abused her at the Playboy Mansion in 2008, is also suing the comedian on sexual battery and other claims.

She said that she hoped prosecutors tried the case again and that the court permits more accusers as witnesses. However, it looks as if those deciding Cosby's fate are hopelessly deadlocked.

Cosby's lawyers have said he and Constand were lovers and that the encounter was consensual.

According to the documents, lawyer Dolores Troiani asked Cosby: "When you got the Quaaludes, was it in your mind that you were going to use these Quaaludes for young women that you wanted to have sex with?" His attorneys have said throughout that their client is innocent of all accusations.

Former federal prosecutor David Weinstein said Cosby's celebrity status nearly certainly played a role in the jury's deliberations, perhaps to convince "two or three jurors that it's impossible to convict Dr. Huxtable, to convict Fat Albert. that he couldn't have done this terrible thing".
