Top US Republican lawmaker Steve Scalise remains hospitalised in critical condition after being shot this week but he has improved, his surgeon said Friday as he expressed optimism about the legislator's prospects for recovery.
After Saturday's surgery, Scalise is in serious condition but continues to show signs of improvement, according to a statement from MedStar Washington Hospital Center released on behalf of his family.
He opened fire at the Republican congressional baseball team practice in Alexandria, Va. after asking another lawmaker whether the team practicing was a group of Republicans or Democrats. Hodgkinson was shot by police and died of his injuries. Hodgkinson wounded House GOP Whip Steve Scalise and several others.

The underlying bill imposed new sanctions on Iran for its ballistic missile program and support for worldwide terrorism. According to Slutsky, these actions show the high degree of anti-Russian "hysteria" still present in the United States.
Scalise's doctors said Friday they were growing increasingly confident and optimistic about his condition, though more operations would be required and it was unclear how long he would be hospitalized.
Scalise arrived at the hospital in a critical state, facing "an imminent risk of death", Sava said.
News that the gunman had a list of names on him at the time of the shooting suggests that it wasn't a random incident but instead was a premeditated attempt to kill the politicians.

The attack occurred outside Muslim Welfare House in the area of north London where worshippers had just broken their Ramadan fast. On May 22, a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert by American pop singer Ariana Grande in Manchester in northern England.
