FIFA Confederations Cup: Mexico snatch late 2-2 draw against Portugal

19 June 2017

Cristiano Ronaldo will put speculation over his club future firmly on one side as he leads European champions Portugal into their Confederations Cup opener against Mexico in Kazan today.

Portugal thought they had snatched victory in the closing stages of the match, as Cedric Soares' deflected effort found the corner of Mexico's net with four minutes of normal time remaining.

He has been attracting headlines after a report by a Portuguese newspaper said he wants to leave Real Madrid because of allegations he defrauded Spanish tax authorities.

Here are three talking points for El Tri from the recent draw.

It took a while for both sides to settle but the first real action of interest was possibly the most contentious.

Shah met Thackeray on the last day of his three-day visit to the city at the latter's residence, Matoshree in Bandra (East). BJP sources said the nomination will be filed before Prime Minister Narendra Modi leaves on his three-nation foreign tour.

Portugal regained the lead in the 86th minute through Cedric Soares' first senior global goal but Moreno's 91st minute header off the post ensured both nations shared the spoils.

Just before halftime, Mexico leveled through Chicharito. Raphael Guerreiro miskicked a cross into the box, allowing Carlos Vela to play the ball back in for Hernandez to score. Santos' decision to bench young hot-shots Bernardo Silva and Andre Silva didn't pan out as he would have wished as the Mexicans had a massive domination over possesion.

Mexicos Héctor Moreno, marked by Portugals No6, José Fonte, directs his header off the inside of the post and in during injury-time.

"Any team having to face Ronaldo is usually considered second-favourites, and Portugal will believe their superstar gives them a huge advantage over the Mexicans in Russian Federation", the report noted.

"The team continue to believe in qualification, we have great possibilities, because there are still two games left". So we have to stay calm and think about the next game. We have to win, because if we win the next game we will be one step away from qualifying.

"In the end it was a well-deserved result after how we played today", Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio said.

It was his snap-shot from the edge of the area, rebounding from the woodwork, that fell into the path of Joao Moutinho in the move that led to a correctly disallowed opening "goal" by Pepe.
