India take on Pakistan in final of ICC Champions Trophy

19 June 2017

Captain Sarfraz Ahmed said: "We are now the champions, so hopefully this win will boost Pakistan cricket".

He ran out his fellow opener Azhar Ali while he was ball-watching after they'd made a record 128 but he shrugged that off too to earn his maiden century for Pakistan, in only his fourth one-day global, 11 days after his debut. In reply, India were all out for 158.

India captain Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to field against arch-rivals Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final at The Oval on Sunday.

With the bat in hand, India found themselves under early pressure after losing both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for just 6 runs.

Yet few would have expected them to dish out a 180-run hammering to India in Sunday's final at The Oval, leaving head coach Arthur to express his amazement at the scale of their revival.

"Amir bowled brilliantly today but all my bowlers bowled really well".

India, strong favourites to retain the title, were outplayed in every aspect of the game by a revitalised Pakistan side whom they had crushed in the group stage of the tournament just two weeks ago.

The score is Pakistan's second-highest against India.

But the Pakistanis wrote off that defeat as an aberration. The Pakistan openers capitalized on the lucky break by attacking Bumrah but Bhuvaneshwar Kumar held his own at the other end. Talking about his bowlers, Kohli said, "With the ball, we could have had more wicket-taking opportunities".

There was no looking back after that and was liberal help from all the Indian bowlers, who erred in length, gave away needless extras to release the pressure completely. In humid conditions and on flattest of decks, Kohli chose to field first but his bowlers did not do justice to the faith he had shown in them.

Fakhar Zaman and Azhar Ali made the ideal start for Pakistan even with Zaman "losing" his wicket only for it to be a no-ball and India missing out on a run-out all before the opener reached 10.

Fakhar lofted Ravindra Jadeja over long-on for six and got to three figures by sweeping Ravichandran Ashwin to the boundary.

This will be the fifth time India and Pakistan will have a face off in the Champions Trophy; the record is now balanced with two victories each.

The sixth century in a Trophy final ended in the 34th over with Pakistan at 200-2.

Put in to bat by Kohli, Pakistan rode on an aggressive 114 from youngster Fakhar Zaman, who made the most of an early reprieve.

Put in to bat, Pakistan got off to a flawless start.

Mohammad Hafeez whacked 57 not out off 37 balls, Babar Azam 46, and Imad Wasim 25 not out, as the last 10 overs netted 91 runs, giving Pakistan's bowlers - its strength - an impressive total to defend.

To retain the title, India will have to produce the highest successful run chase in Trophy history in cricket's biggest rivalry. Amir, fired up, got Sharma lbw.

Pakistan's opening partnership of 128 between Azhar Ali and Zaman was instrumental as they put up a big score. He edged one to wicketkeeper MS Dhoni , off Jasprit Bumrah , but made most of the opportunity since then.

Pakistan set a target of 339. Kohli looking to move across and flick into the on side got a leading edge straight to point and gave simple catch to Shadab Khan.
