WASHINGTON (AP) - Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise was upgraded from "critical" to "serious condition" Saturday and continued to show signs of improvement after he was wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice outside Washington.
Doctors said Friday the bullet entered at his hip and traveled across his body, causing severe damage to internal organs.
The American Hospital Association defines "critical" condition as: "Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits".
"He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones", MedStar Washington Hospital said in an email Saturday.

The gunman, identified as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., died from injuries sustained during the shootout with police.
Investigators say they have yet to find anything indicating Hodgkinson had an attack plan in mind, adding he told his wife earlier this week he was heading back to IL and he canceled his membership in the YMCA the day before the shooting and talked to a local garage about getting his van ready.
Two sources close to the congressman's family said medical staff removed a tube that had been inserted into Scalise's abdomen to prevent fluid from going into his lungs while being sedated, The Baton Rouge Advocate reported. The group has since said it does not condone violence.
Though Scalise was conscious at the scene after he was shot and his office said he talked to his wife before his first surgery, he was in shock by the time he arrived at the hospital, according to Sava. Scalise will undergo more operations. He will remain in the intensive care unit through at least the weekend, they said.

The match between Shanghai SIPG and Guangzhou R&F descended into farce shortly before the end of the first half. The playmaker's actions appeared deliberate as he booted the ball at players on the halfway line.
"The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers", the statement concludes. Infection remains a considerable risk in the days and weeks during Scalise's extended hospital stay, Sava said.
Another Capitol Police officer, David Bailey, who was hit by shrapnel, and a congressional aide, Zach Barth, who was shot, were previously treated and released from a hospital.
The hospital released the statement on behalf of Scalise's family.
