Adele visits Grenfell Tower firefighters for a "tea and a cuddle"

He said: "I'm afraid to say there are now 79 people that we believe are either dead or missing and I sadly have to presume they're dead".

Right after the disaster, Adele also went down to visit the hundreds who were made homeless and had lost their friends and family in the devastating fire.

The London Fire Brigade and firefighter Rob Petty shared a handful of pictures of the "wonderfully grounded" Londoner as she joined them at the station.

He said that five of the dead had been formally identified and it would be a slow and painstaking task to identify the others.

Firefighters have been scouring the top floors of the building - where the blaze is said to have originated - but have struggled to identify bodies amid the blackened wreckage.

"If I identify.an issue that is a risk to public safety, we will be sharing that immediately with the relevant authorities", he added.

The Department for Communities and Local Government, which received the letters, said work to improve regulation and safety had already been under way.

Grenfell Tower is located in a pocket of social deprivation within the borough of Kensington and Chelsea, one of Britain's wealthiest areas.

Mr Cundy also promised an "exhaustive" criminal investigation into the fire that would also look at a major refurbishment of the building completed previous year.

"I also want take this opportunity to remind everyone that Essex County Fire and Rescue Service carry out home fire safety visits to anyone living in Essex completely free of charge where will run through escape plans and fit smoke alarms".

"Whilst it will look at the how, perhaps more importantly, it will also look at why this happened", Cundy said. But I don't think anything prepared me for what I was going to see when I was in there.

Cundy said that five people reported as missing in the fire had now been found and were safe and well.
