Parents Fred and Cindy Warmbier said in a statement the day of his release that they wanted "the world to know how we and our son have been brutalized and terrorized by the pariah regime" and expressed relief he had been returned to "finally be with people who love him".

Young Pioneer Tours said on its Facebook page that the death of 22-year-old Otto Warmbier shows the risk facing American tourists in North Korea "has become too high".
They wrote that they endured "rigorous, daily interrogation sessions" in North Korea, but didn't give a detailed account of the questioning or their treatment during their detention. "The way his detention was handled was appalling, and a tragedy like this must never be repeated", it said.
Warmbier had planned to study in China in his third year of college and heard about Chinese travel companies offering trips to North Korea.
Warmbier passed away at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in OH at 2:20 pm local time, the family said.
Relatives say Otto Warmbier died Monday.
The coroner's office daily report Tuesday included Warmbier in its listings with cause of death termed "pending".
