Tropical system targets Gulf Coast, system slightly strengthens

Over the last several days, we've told you about a tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico that could bring impacts to the Alabama Gulf Coast.

"Watch out for street flooding and flash flooding issues around town".

Tropical Storm Bret, which was named Monday afternoon near the Windward Islands, has crossed into the eastern Caribbean Sea after making landfall on Trinidad and Tobago on Monday night. The storm system is not expected to strengthen on Tuesday and is forecast to weaken to a tropical depression on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service also says the biggest threat from the disturbance is the likely heavy rainfall over wide areas of the northern rim of the Gulf of Mexico.

So far, "Potential Tropical Cyclone Three" has winds of 40 miles per hour, but Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft were unable to find a well-defined center of circulation, which keeps it from being a named storm.

Tropical storm-force winds are expected to reach the warning area by late Tuesday.

A warning is still in effect for portions of Venezuela, from Pedernales to Cumana including Isla de Margarita.

Most areas will get four to eight inches of rain through Friday, but some areas could see even high totals.

However, the focus on Monday was on the viability of the Good Friday Agreement. The Agreement also makes Dublin a co-guarantor of the agreement.

"This system will spread very heavy rain bands over us". That could bring four to eight inches of rain to southeastern Louisiana, southern MS, southern Alabama, and the Florida panhandle over the next few days.

The warning is in effect from Cameron, Louisiana, to Intracoastal City.

The storm system - identified as Potential Tropical Cyclone Three - is about 265 miles south-southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River and is moving northwest at a speed of 9 mph as of Tuesday morning. Its maximum sustained winds are near 40 miles per hour with weakening expected to begin later in the day.
