Turkey's Erdogan condemns Qatar blockade 'death sentence'

Underpinning Turkey's stance on Qatar are strong investment ties, cooperation in Syria's civil war and the sharing of similar views on political Islam, most notably on Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, which the Gulf monarchies and Egypt oppose. But Qatar wields a potential economic weapon if the crisis escalates and countries around the world that depend on its supply may find themselves needing to side with the tiny nation that is home to a major USA military installation. Qatar denies supporting terrorist organizations, but Western officials have regularly accused Qatar's government of allowing or even encouraging the funding of some Sunni extremists.

"Qatar is of the opinion that dialogue is the best answer to this crisis".

Turkey has declared its full support to Qatar by offering food supplies and deploying its military troops in Qatar.

The minister, who is also president of Qatar Airways' executive board, said: "Our reserves and investment funds are more than 250 percent of gross domestic product, so I don't think there is any reason that people need to be concerned about what's happening or any speculation on the Qatari riyal". Food security is part of Qatar's government strategy to steer the economy away from petrodollars, known, like in Saudi Arabia, as "Vision 2030".
