Tropical Storm Warnings and Flood Watch Issued for the Gulf Coast

Tropical Storm Bret has sustained winds of 40 mph that extend out 80 miles north of the center.

Swirling just off the coast of Venezuela, it is the second tropical storm named of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season.

A tropical storm watch is in place for Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.

Forecasters say the Alabama and MS coasts could be inundated with as much as 15 inches of rain from the tropical storm. Forecasters expect 6 to 9 inches of rainfall with isolated maximum amounts of 12 inches over southeastern Louisiana, southern MS, southern Alabama, and northwestern Florida through Thursday.

Bret impacted Trinidad and Tobago with heavy rain Monday night and continued to affect the northern coast of Venezuela. Tropical Storm Cindy has taken shape and is already impacting parts of the southern United States early this week.

Forecasters said the system will move inland by late Wednesday night or early Thursday, with slight strengthening possible. If it becomes a tropical storm, it would be named Cindy.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic basin, Tropical Storm Bret is forecast to weaken as it churns off the coast of Venezuela about 20 miles east-northeast from the Isla de Margarita.

The National Weather Service has issued a tropical storm warning from High Island, Texas, in the west, to the Louisiana-Mississippi state line.
