Tropical Storm Cindy Whipping Up Trouble Along Gulf Coast

Tropical storm warnings remain in effect all the way to Galveston, Texas.

Tropical Storm Cindy continues to dump rain across the Gulf Coast, according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

The storm system as maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour as of 1 pm CDT on June 21, and is located about 170 southwest of Morgan City, La., and 160 southeast of Galveston, Texas.

This week's dual tropical storms, first Bret and now Cindy, marked a couple of firsts in the records books. the rare appearance of two storms so early in the year.

Rain will cause the biggest impact and fall most heavily from New Orleans to the Florida Panhandle, Strum added.

Houston will be on the west side of the storm's center at landfall.

The storm was moving toward the northwest at almost 8 miles per hour, and officials expect a turn toward the north-northwest, likely on Thursday.

National Weather Service forecasts have predicted 3-6 inches of rain to the area, combined with 4-5 ft. tides and high winds, which could hinder transportation to and from the peninsula. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey issued a state of emergency because of the threat of torrential rains and other severe weather.

The National Weather Services does not expect winds to intensify much and says it should not exceed 45 miles per hour . This area includes western Georgia, and it is at a higher risk of being flooded than other parts of the South or East.

Friday into Saturday, the storm's remnants will probably become linked with a front headed toward the East Coast, potentially enhancing rainfall in the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic before pushing offshore.

Cindy is expected to make landfall between southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana sometime Thursday - with a possible 3-foot storm surge.

Areas west of Interstate 45 will be drier, with periodic showers and storms possible, but no risk of flooding.

Tropical storm Cindy has began to make it's way inland and the Gulf Coast has already seen major impacts.
