US Senate Republicans to Unveil New Healthcare Bill

22 June 2017

"Still, next to nothing is known now about the content of the bill".

Where can I read it?

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was expected to push for a vote next week on the legislation, which would eliminate much of Obama's 2010 overhaul and leave government with a diminished role in providing coverage and helping people afford it. The Senate's draft of the AHCA may be a slightly gentler attack than the House bill, but still an attack nonetheless.

They say the Affordable Care Act and the underlying financing structure of the Medicaid program should be modified in ways that promote overall savings in the system, rather than cutting funding to states.

To help pay for its expanded coverage to around 20 million people, Obama's law increased taxes on higher income people, medical industry companies and others, totaling around $1 trillion over a decade.

Some Republican Senators behind those closed meetings on health care say once the bill is released, it will gain public support. Susan Collins, R-Maine, have expressed concern that the measure would cause many to lose coverage.

Subsidies are now available to Americans earning up to 400 percent of the federal poverty level. According to the draft, assistance will be capped for those earning 350 percent of the federal poverty level beginning in 2020.

"They seem to be enthusiastic about what we're producing tomorrow", No. 2 Senate GOP leader John Cornyn of Texas told reporters.

According to McConnell, he initially chose a 13-member group to work on the bill.

The report notes that even the other senators who were not picked to rework and draft a bill that could greatly affect nearly a fifth (17.8 percent) of the country's economy-according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services numbers from 2015-still received on average $115,000 from the two industries.

Pence, who has substantially more legislative experience than Trump, has attend a luncheon with Senate Republicans almost every week, checking in on the health care process as a liaison for the White House.

Blumenthal's field hearing on Friday will be held at New Haven City Hall at 1:30 p.m.

As The Washington Post points out, Republican Senators are employing unprecedented secrecy around the bill, keeping the text hidden from the full body and the public as it races to a vote before Congress adjourns for recess ahead of the Fourth of July.

Can Democrats stop the bill? .

Last night (June 19) several senators took to the floor to deliver speeches meant to slow down the process.

Conservatives like Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., have warned they could oppose the bill if it doesn't go far enough in dismantling Obama's law. Republicans won competitive Senate races in some of the country's hardest-hit states. In a 50-50 tally, Vice President Mike Pence would cast the tie-breaking vote. The Senate parliamentarian acts essentially as a gate-keeper and issues decisions on whether certain provisions comply with the rules.
