After firing missiles targeting the Islamic State group in eastern Syria, Iran's Revolutionary Guard on Monday issued a stark warning to IS militants, saying that any future attack against Iran will result in more powerful launches. While Iran has other ballistic missiles it says can reach longer distances, Sunday night's launch appears to mark the longest strike it has launched overseas.

The Iraqi prime minister, for his part, condemned the June 7 terrorist attacks on Iran's Parliament and Imam Khomeini shrine which claimed the lives of 17 people, adding "such acts show that terrorism knows no borders".

Both the administration of former President Barack Obama and Trump's have focused exclusively on defeating Islamic State, but with the militants' self-proclaimed caliphate shrinking, US -backed and Syrian-backed forces appear to be competing for territory.
