25 June 2017

In his keynote address after unveiling a commemorative edition of the National Herald here along with Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, Ansari said he was sure that the National Herald will live up to the high standards set by independent India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who set up the newspaper.

"Will be travelling to meet my grandmother and family for a few days". "(I) have told K.C. Venugopal that whoever is standing with the people, whoever is working for Congress, whether he is leader or small workers, they should get tickets", Gandhi said, speaking at the delegates meet of the state Congress unit. He did not specify his destination.

While he did not mention where is heading to and for how many days, he will probably be heading to Italy as his grandmother Paola Maino lives there.

Rahul has of late been tweeting about his foreign trips, disappointing his partymen by his sudden disappearances amid crucial political issues.

However the Congress Party slammed the BJP for creating an unwarranted hype around Gandhi's visit. "We strongly criticise those who are trying to politicise this", said spokesperson RS Surjewala. Meeting his maternal grandmother and asking for her health is a part of our culture & tradition. Those who does not know the importance of family only those will condemn this.

Leaders close to Mr Gandhi defended him by saying that Congress president Sonia Gandhi had taken the charge to rally and field a joint Opposition candidate for the presidential elections, and not Mr Gandhi.
