Sanders Of Supporter And Alleged Shooter: 'Violence Of Any Kind Is Unacceptable'

25 Июня 2017

The gunman, identified by authorities as James Hodgkinson, 66, of Bellevile, Illinois, was killed in a firefight with police on Thursday after shooting at a party preparing for a congressional baseball game in Alexandria, Virginia.

Sanders issued a two-paragraph statement on Wednesday's shooting at a baseball practice for Republican lawmakers, and read it almost verbatim on the Senate floor.

"He never expressed himself, at least to me politically", the former mayor said. Steve Scalise before he was fatally shot by police who had been guarding the House majority whip. "And our deepest thanks again to the superb Capitol Police who protect all who work in or visit the capitol".

Hodgkinson's social media account reflected his support for Bernie Sanders during the presidential primary.

"We have to answer motive and why he was here and why he did what he did", Slater said.

Hodgkinson had previous run-ins with the law, ranging from domestic battery charges to unlawful discharge of a firearm.

"I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign", Sanders said, according to CNN. Authorities believe Hodgkinson had been in the Alexandria area since March, living out of a cargo van and not working, Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Tim Slater said.

Hodgkinson's Facebook page paints a portrait of a man with strong political views.

Law enforcement officials arrived at Hodgkinson's small farmhouse in the rural community southeast of St. Louis on Wednesday. "It's Time to Destroy Trump & Co".

"There was nothing we could arrest him for", said Watson, "and there was no indication he was mentally ill or going to harm anyone".

Until recently, Hodgkinson ran a home-inspection business out of his house in southern IL. Court records show that his legal trouble started in the 1990s.

The Belleville News-Democrat on Wednesday released several letters to the editor Hodgkinson wrote in 2012 that criticized conservative policies and Republican politicians.

The FBI was already combing through Hodgkinson's IL home by the time his identity was released to the public.
