For becoming the top dog, Martha will receive a prize of US$1,500 (S$2,100) and will fly to NY to appear on television. She constantly plopped down on her side on the stage, her droopy face spread out when she was supposed to be showing off.

She's a 125-pound Neapolitan Mastiff. She won out of 13 dogs and her own couldn't be more proud of her.

Her handler Shirley Zindler told CTV News Channel after the event that entering Martha into the contest was "kind of a last minute thing".

Jessica Burkard of Penngrove, California, saw a attractive companion for her St. Bernard when she found Martha, a 125-pound Neapolitan mastiff. He has lost his hearing and sight but his sense of smell is strong and he was enjoying all the smells the fairground offered - including funnel cakes and other fried goodies.

The contest is judged based on both appearance and personality.

And while each canine contestant had its own unsightly features, all of them had heartwarming stories, from neglect and abandonment to disabilities and surgeries.
