Bill Cosby's publicist issued a strong statement after a judge declared the 79-year-old comedian's sexual assault trial a mistrial after jurors failed to reach a verdict despite 52 hours of deliberation.
Cosby's chief accuser, Canadian Andrea Constand is thanking prosecutors for taking her case and in a statement and said the trial has given a voice to the many complainants who felt powerless and silenced. Prosecutors reopened a criminal probe and filed charges in 2015 after Cosby's deposition in the woman's 2005 lawsuit was unsealed, and they realized the 12-year statute of limitations for felony sexual assault had not yet expired.
The jury began deliberations in Norristown, Pennsylvania, on Monday and stayed late each night since then.
A lawyer on the case recalled her startling account of being drugged and sexually assaulted by Cosby, but his notes revealed a glaring discrepancy in the account.
"She has shown such courage through this, and we are in awe of what she has done", Steele said.
The prosecution spent five days painstakingly trying to build their case, calling Constand and her mother to the stand, as well as another woman who alleged that Cosby also drugged and assaulted her in Bel Air in 1996.

Nestle said this month it may sell its US chocolate and candy unit, which includes brands such as Butterfinger and Baby Ruth. Additionally, Third Point doesn't necessarily have a large enough stake in Nestle to truly affect change.
Bill Cosby's lawyer has repeatedly demanded a mistrial as the talks wore on without a verdict, but the judge said there was no precedent to send the jury home.
Instead she put across a venomous attack on Steele's credibility, as well as that of Judge Steven O'Neill and the media.
He dismissed the district attorney's pledge to retry the case.
The testimony is relevant because Cosby is charged with giving pills to Constand, former director of operations for the Temple women's basketball team, to incapacitate her before their sexual encounter.
But it was Cosby's reputation as a public moralist who urged young people to pull up their saggy trousers and start acting responsibly that prompted a federal judge to unseal portions of an explosive deposition he gave more than a decade ago as part of Constand's civil lawsuit against him.
Cosby's career and good-guy image were already in tatters by the time his chief accuser took the witness stand, and the prosecution's decision to pursue a second trial keeps him in legal limbo.

He did not give evidence, leaving it to his lawyer Brian McMonagle to argue Cosby and Constand were lovers and the encounter was consensual.
But it was his reputation as a public moralist who urged young people to pull up their saggy trousers and start acting responsibly that prompted a federal judge to unseal portions of an explosive deposition he gave more than a decade ago as part of Constand's civil lawsuit against him. "Everyone is assuming one way or another", said O'Neill.
"We will evaluate and review our case. Overtly and arrogantly collaborating with the District Attorney", she added.
"There are some things in this case that should be fuzzy. Why?"
Cosby had previously admitted to having an affair, McMonagle said, but that was not what he had been on trial for.
The charges stem from Andrea Constand's allegations that he drugged and violated her at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004. But TV networks had long since scrapped plans for a comeback and pulled reruns from the air after his lurid deposition testimony became public. "Bill Cosby's rape case", said Armour, who teaches at the University of South California.
