Europe's once positive world view of United States slips under Trump

Perhaps that's fitting, as there is so much in the relationship to work on.

Amidst laughter, Trump told Modi that he will do the toast as soon as the media leaves. On trade, Trump demanded fewer barriers for American companies exporting to India.

According to CNBC, a senior Indian government official said that Modi "is prepared to dive into this complicated discussion by highlighting the value Indian-Americans have contributed to the US economy, including an estimated 64,000 jobs".

As Narendra Moldi and Donald Trump called on Pakistan to ensure that its territory is not used to launch terrorist attacks on other countries, the USA on Monday cleared the sale of predator Guardian drones to India, while pledging stronger defence and security cooperation between themselves. "That's something [both sides] might hope to correct". Relations between countries are strongest when they are devoted to the interests of the people we serve.

Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump warmly welcomed Modi, as he reached White House on Monday afternoon.

The White House did not provide a detailed account of the meeting, however, the statement did make several references to Pakistan, notably a call for the country to "ensure that its territory is not used to launch terrorist attacks on other countries", and to "bring to justice the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai, Pathankot, and other cross-border terrorist attacks".

Both men are prolific users of social media, something Trump joked about with his guest. The same could be said for the thousands of Indians studying in the United States, whose talents can benefit both countries.

Heaping praise on Prime Minister Modi, Trump said he had been reading a lot about him and that he would want to congratulate him for the exemplary leadership he has shown, primarily, economically.

But the Indian leader's visit comes at an inopportune time, as the president and his team are distracted by domestic political and legal challenges. He also thanked India for ordering defence equipment from the US. He can take full advantage of the strong relationship he has built with Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, and of the friendship that has grown up between Abe and Modi, to shape a robust three-way alliance that can oversee the security environment in the entire Indo-Pacific region.

President Trump reaffirmed the support of the United States for India's permanent membership on a reformed U.N. Security Council. Certainly the time is ripe for a major transformation of U.S. But Washington and New Delhi share concerns about China's rise as a military power. "This kind of 180-degree turn is very concerning to India".

When Modi visited Washington in September 2014, Obama took the Indian Prime Minister to the Martin Luther King Jr.

Trump declared he was "true friend" of India and said relations between the two largest democracies have never been better.

Both the leaders struck a common note on terrorism, saying eliminating it is among the top-most priorities for the two nations.

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi held delegation-level talks with President Trump in the Cabinet Room at the White House.

The new sanctions mean American citizens are generally barred from doing business with Salahuddin, and all his assets subject to the United States jurisdiction are blocked. There's trade, where Trump's America First approach to economics seeks to squeeze out gains from US partners.

"I think we've now come to a fork in the road, and it's not clear which way we are going to go", he says.
