Federer beats Cilic at Wimbledon to lift 19th Grand Slam title

17 July 2017

Roger Federer became the first man in tennis history to win eight Wimbledon titles when he dominated Marin Cilic of Croatia 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 in the final on Sunday.

As for Cilic, his run at Wimbledon 2017 was also fantastic.

Federer started the match strongly from the very beginning winning the first set 6-3 before taking a lead of 3-0 in the second one.

En-route the championship, Federer did not drop a single set.

I knew that if I was playing like I was playing during the two weeks, I was going to have eventually an opportunity. How right she was! The victor will take home £2.2 million in prize money, with the runner-up netting £1.1 million.

He was injured and received treatment on his left foot on the changeover between the second and third sets. He didn't lose a single set during this year's tournament, becoming only the second player since Bjorn Borg to do so during the Open era (when professional tennis players were allowed to compete versus amateurs), which began in 1968. Marin Cilic, however, remained at the sixth place. He has far less experience, but he does have a Grand Slam win, earning the US Open title in 2014. This is also his 19th Grand Slam singles title. "It's great, but it doesn't give me the title quite yet". That was my idea today. Because of them, I think I became a better player, too. I had an unbelievable journey here.

"So I totally see myself playing here this time next year".

"It's just belief, that I can achieve such heights, I wasn't sure I would ever be here in another final but I always believed I could maybe come back and do it again", Federer said.

Russian Federation and the United States recently kicked off negotiations aimed at forging a broader peace in Syria. The White House says the bill would strip the administration of necessary foreign policy flexibility.

Though Cilic did not appear to be carrying an injury in the following games he was evidently struggling to hold his own as Federer, a seven-time champion at SW19, produced tennis of a standard to rival any during his illustrious career.

Federer described his opponent, who was hampered by injury during the match, as "a hero" and congratulated him on "an incredible tournament".

"I hope this wasn't my last match, I hope I can come back next year and try to defend the title". Better than winning this trophy is being healthy.

Although, he has broken the men's record, the 14-year gap has only matched the record which Serena Williams reached last year. I had some tough ones here, losing to Novak in '14 and '15.

Gradually reopening the site to worshippers and visitors "will be based on an estimate that will be made Sunday", he said. The closure stopped Muslims gathering there for Friday prayers, drawing a call for resistance from Palestinian leaders.
