PM Turnbull Confirms Postal Vote, Reveals Cost Of Ballot

08 August 2017

A popular Australian TV host has used his early morning show to slam his countries politicians over their inaction over the rights of same-sex couples.

Australians will not be forced to vote on the issue; the postal plebiscite would be voluntary.

The ballot papers would be issued on September 12 with the result declared on November 15.

"Our preference is to have a compulsory attendance plebiscite", Cormann told reporters in Canberra, Australia's capital on Monday.

The traditional plebiscite would cost up to $170 million.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said Labor would not support the plebiscite.

"Our expectation would be that that law would pass the Parliament", Senator Cormann said.

Tensions are high in the Coalition ahead of today's series of meetings to try and resolve the issue which has distracted the government from its agenda and exposed the weakened authority of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

He labelled the postal vote option an "extraordinary" action from an "incompetent" government.

"We think this is a harmful debate", he said. "But the weakest argument of all is that the Australian people can't have a respectful discussion on this topic", Turnbull told the press.

At last year's federal election, the Coalition pledged to put the issue to the people in a national plebiscite.

Some Liberal MPs are also uneasy about the idea with former prime minister Tony Abbott, Kevin Andrews, Craig Kelly, Julian Lesser and Russell Broadbent all raising concerns about a postal plebiscite during the special meeting on Monday.

A previous plebiscite Bill was rejected last November by the Senate, where Labor, the Greens and some other minor party MPs prefer an immediate free vote.

"Fucking exhausted of having our relationships treated like a political football when there are so many other important issues the country needs to address and resolve", added Jahshan.

'Let's just have a free vote in parliament'.

A HERVEY Bay woman who exchanged vows with her female partner in a ceremony in Urangan past year has backed a push by rebel Liberal MPs to support a free vote on legalising same-sex marriage rather than the conservative plan for a postal plebiscite.

Anti-gay marriage advocates support the referendum, despite opinion polls showing that most Australians agree with marriage equality.

Sky News reports the government has received advice that it will be able to launch the postal vote without senate authorisation.

If the postal vote was carried, a parliamentary vote could then be held and the matter ended. "Turnbull's leadership would become untenable and he'd no longer be prime minister".

"The proposition that voluntary voting lacks legitimacy, I don't accept".

The issue has divided the ruling coalition and loomed as a continuing threat to Mr Turnbull, a progressive who has struggled to control the conservative wing of his Liberal party.

No one would have backed United to pull off the insane transfer but the club's vice president Ed Woodward did the impossible. It is United's first competitive game before their Premier League campaign starts next Sunday against West Ham United.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said the outcome of the meeting was "ridiculous".
