Hurricane Harvey Is Only Getting Worse, With Floodwaters Continuing to Rise

29 August 2017

Harvey, the most powerful hurricane to strike Texas in more than 50 years, first hit land late on Friday and has killed at least two people.

Trump made clear via Twitter over the weekend that he was monitoring the storm, tweeting about the "wonderful coordination between Federal, State and Local Governments" in the face of "record setting rainfall".

President Donald Trump is expected to visit Texas Tuesday for updates on the devastating flooding from Harvey as crews overwhelmed by thousands of rescue calls have had little time to search for other potential victims.

The storm's centre moved to about 35 kilometres north-west of Victoria, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 65 kilometres per hour, the hurricane center said.

FEMA says it has made available more than 1 million liters of water, along with 1 million meals, more than 20,000 tarps and 70 generators at staging areas in Texas and Louisiana.

The authorities across the U.S. state of Texas continued on Monday to rescue people stranded by devastating, historic flooding left in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, even as forecasters warned of looming rain, rising rivers and floodwaters that would still swallow more streets and neighbourhoods.

40,000: Estimated number of Hurricane Katrina evacuees who had permanently resettled in the Houston area as of 2015, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Earlier, Texas Governor Greg Abbott deployed an additional 1,000 National Guard troops, on top of the 3,000 already sent in the flood-stricken state, which is the size of France, Belgium and Switzerland combined.

Texas National Guardsmen assist residents affected by flooding onto a military vehicle on Sunday in Houston. "We're anticipating over 30,000 people being placed in shelters temporarily to basically stabilize the situation and provide for their care", Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator Brock Long told a news conference in Washington.

"While this is still a unsafe situation with a long response effort ahead, the state and people of Texas are resilient", Long said. During the press conference, the president of Finland took questions alongside Trump. At least five people have been confirmed dead, and many are still trapped by the high water.

After two wins from their opening two games in the big league, it's time to take David Wagner's Huddersfield side seriously. But the one to watch this weekend is Brazilian forward Richarlison - who scored his first goal for the side last week.

An evacuation order is "not as black and white as people are making it out to be, and perhaps there could be hidden dangers with putting people out on the roads", Shepherd said.

Judging from federal disaster declarations, the storm has so far affected about a quarter of the Texas population, or 6.8 million people in 18 counties.

Harvey is the first major natural disaster to hit the US Trump's presidency.

Officials also believe that as rescue efforts continue, the death toll could rise. "So there is absolutely no reason to evacuate from Houston or the greater Houston area".

AFGHANISTAN: US also needs help
Coons said it uses a regional approach to challenge Pakistan's troubling practice of harbouring extremist groups. President Trump's claim of "paying Pakistan billions and billions of dollars" was said to be "misleading".
