They were denied by some inspired goalkeeping and some inept finishing. But their bench still betters any other in Europe. "A team like Chelsea can win the Champions League, when they won they were not the best".

Spurs finally returned to the Champions League last season and after a disappointing group stage exit they will be determined to go one better this campaign, but a tough group - and Bale - stand in their way.

"We have a stupendous squad but this is a competition that takes you to the limit in all aspects", added Butragueno.

The Spaniard was frustrated not to win Saturday evening's trip to Stoke, but the lack of minutes before the 2-2 draw has not grated anywhere near as much on the midfielder.

Bale appeared as a substitute when Madrid beat Juventus 4-1 in last season's Champions League final, which was staged in the winger's home city of Cardiff.

They've shown that, certainly last season with their record against the top seven in England, and their performances a couple of seasons ago to get to the final of the Europa League. Will the Europa League cost us a place in next term's CL competition? Three in a row will elevate this team to legendary status, a team that can be talked of as among the best ever.

But since Chelsea's success in Munich at the end of that era there has been a drought with just two semi-finalists in four years.

Atletico Madrid and perhaps Borussia Dortmund have an outside shot and Paris Saint-Germain, after landing Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, are the wild cards.

Mauricio Pochettino's side has also been drawn alongside Real Madrid and APOEL Nicosia in Group H, but Newcastle legend Shearer sees no reason as to why Spurs couldn't get out of their group and so by beating the likes of Madrid.

Each one of them has their flaws.

Madrid's recent struggles may make Tottenham a little more confident.

Hurricane Irma: Florida shuts down air travel
Miami's airport is open for now, though its primary tenant - American Airlines - said it will halt its schedule there by 4 p.m. JetBlue Airways and American Airlines are helping people get out of the region before they shut down operations in the state.

Real's strength in depth was used intelligently by coach Zinedine Zidane to win the club's first La Liga and European Cup double for 59 years last season.

"[Danny] Welbeck being back is also a big plus, but their problems are the same problems, and that central defensive area will be their Achilles heel this season".

However, they've started this season in rampant form and now have a very strong squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.

Surviving Irma on Marco Island: 'It was a badass hurricane'
Dave Baer confirmed that there are parts of the island, like Barfield Drive, with 1 to 2 feet of standing water. Additional slow weakening is expected, and Irma is expected to be a tropical depression by Tuesday afternoon.
