N. Korea denounces new United Nations sanctions

13 September 2017

Moscow and Beijing have little interest in imposing tougher sanctions, and reluctantly went along with the watered down Security Council resolution. American diplomats' initial draft sought an oil embargo, a halt on North Korea's textile exports, and a financial and travel ban on leader Kim Jong Un.

But it only caps Pyongyang's imports of crude oil at the level of the last 12 months, and it limits the import of refined petroleum products to 2 million barrels a year.

But a US -drafted resolution originally calling for an oil embargo on the North, a halt to its key exports of textiles and subjecting leader Kim Jong Un to a financial and travel ban appears to have been watered down to placate Russian Federation and China, which both have veto powers, diplomats said.

According to officials at British intelligence headquarters at Whitehall, North Korea's rapid advances in nuclear weapons may have been the direct result of Iranian influence. "But not everyone would die", he said, talking about a nuclear war with the U.S. If the North is as calm in the face of nuclear war as this one official suggests, why should the country be concerned about sanctions?

When North Korea's nuclear scientists and engineers returned home, they were given a heroes welcome in Pyongyang.

An America-led resolution toughening sanctions on North Korea was adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council Monday.

Haley praised the "strong relationship" between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping for enabling the resolution's adoption.

Briefing the USA lawmakers, Treasury Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing Marshall Billingslea displayed satellite photos to demonstrate North Korea's deceptive shipping practices.

Beijing and Moscow have called for a resolution that focuses on a political solution and proposed a freeze-for-freeze that would halt North Korean nuclear and missile tests in exchange for the USA and South Korea stopping their joint military exercises. North Korea tested a lackluster nuclear device for the first time in 2006, but about a week ago, the rogue regime tested a possible staged thermonuclear bomb for deployment atop the North's Hwasong-14 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

The European Union will enforce new United Nations sanctions over North Korea's nuclear programme while pressing ahead with work on fresh measures of its own, the bloc's diplomatic chief said Tuesday.

But Kang added both the United States and South Korea believed in following a policy of "responding firmly (to) provocations through tough sanctions while leaving the door open for dialogue".

Rycroft characterized the concessions as the product of the normal give and take of U.N. diplomacy, and added that "there is a significant prize in keeping the whole of the Security Council united".

Tornadoes are possible Monday in the day and through the night near the Georgia and SC coasts, the NHC said. Rainfall amounts of up to 20 inches could lead to flash flooding, especially in southern parts of Georgia.

Haley has called the proposal insulting. President Trump so far has said this is not the time to talk, but his administration has been sending a lot of mixed signals, confusing signals about this.

"This includes removing the THAAD military defence system, stopping military exercises, involving the United States and South Korea, stopping talk of regime change, and starting fresh talks".

David von Hippel, an energy expert with the Nautilus Institute think tank who has done extensive research on North Korea, said he doubts that oil sanctions will hit the regime very hard.

"In case the United States eventually does rig up the illegal and unlawful "resolution" on harsher sanctions, the DPRK shall make absolutely sure that the USA pays due price", the statement added.

DPRK stands for the North's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. If a war that no one else wants is to be avoided, then it is imperative that, in the absence of an worldwide consensus, the United States take the strongest possible measures to avoid it.
