Hurricane Irma damages North West Company's Caribbean businesses

14 September 2017

Days after Hurricane Irma destroyed parts of the Caribbean, residents throughout the island nations say they're in need of assistance amid reports of lack of food, shelter and in some cases violence.

Former San Antonio Spurs big man and proud U.S. Virgin Islands native Tim Duncan took to The Players' Tribune last Friday to seek help for the victims in his hometown, and has since drawn a huge response.

The satellite images released by NASA track Hurricane Irma from September 1 to September 10, as it moves over the Caribbean into the USA mainland.

This is the first time on record that the continental United States has had two Category 4 hurricane landfalls in the same year. Although the brunt of the storm has passed, further evacuations may take place as there is no power or running water in areas.

Speaking to Sky News' Foreign Affairs Editor Sam Kiley on an aid flight to the region, alongside Royal Marines and medics, Mr Johnson said: "This has been long-planned ever since the hurricane broke".

His trip comes after the United Kingdom government was criticised for its perceived slow and inadequate response to help affected communities in its overseas territories. French President Emmanuel Macron is due to visit St. Martin on Tuesday.

Mr Ian Smart told The Daily Telegraph that his son Jos with his girlfriend Julia Taylor were trapped on the same island, where "lawlessness is getting worse".

Critics have said the UK Government did not prepare adequately, was slow to respond once Irma hit and did less to evacuate its citizens than other nations.

The British overseas territories, including Anguilla, Turks and Caicos, and the British Virgin Islands, have their own government, but they rely on the London Executive when it comes to assuring protection during natural disasters.

The army man added: "On top of that we are then working alongside DFID (Department of International Development) who are providing all the aid".
