UP govt draws widespread criticism over BHU violence

26 September 2017

25 September, Monday: Expressing their solidarity with their kind in Varanasi, students in New Delhi take out protest marches and engage in clashes with the police.

According to the report, the biggest fault in this case is that of the administration and such a controversy would not have taken place had they handled the matter appropriately.

The students demanded 24 X 7 security, making security personnel accountable for lapses, better lighting on roads leading to women's hostels, CCTV surveillance, inclusion of women security personnel and formation of a gender sensitisation committee. The protests reach the national capital, and various student political outfits condemn the incident.

The Vice-Chancellor was criticised for victim shaming and was even blamed for not taking action on the complaint by the women students. BHU has been criticised by its alumni as well as current students for having policies that give more leeway to the male students over the women.
