Rohingya boat toll rises to 23 as more bodies found

The incident was the latest tragedy to strike those fleeing violence in Myanmar.

Early September, 46 bodies were recovered after a boat sank between Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Myanmar leader has faced scathing criticism for not doing more to stop the violence, although a military-drafted constitution gives her no power over the security forces.

No Rohingya had entered the state till date, the official asserted.

Last October, following attacks on border posts in Maungdaw district, security forces launched a five-month crackdown in which, according to Rohingya groups, around 400 people were killed. It is thought many others may have been able to swim to the coast of Rakhine.

The ceasefire is due to end at midnight on Monday, but the insurgents said in a statement they were ready to respond to any peace move by the government.
