Reyes dismissed the move as "a marketing ploy that will eventually fail as more families stay away from both organizations". "I just don't know how many girls would want to be part of Boy Scouts either", Ferguson said. But the Girl Scouts of the U.S. have opposed the plan, saying the move was put into place because of financial problems.
"We believe strongly in the importance of the all-girl, girl-led and girl-friendly environment that Girl Scouts provides", the GSUSA said.
But will the inclusion of girls accelerate defections from the Boy Scouts, in the same way that ending the gay bans led to Mormon-LDS/evangelist defections?
She argues their research shows single-gender programs work best for girls, "Single-gender activities in leadership development are more successful and more meaningful for girls from the feedback we've gotten from them that they want to remain in a single-gender environment" said Hamilton.
